Storj Blog

Today marks a really exciting day for Storj Labs. We launched the first beta of our V3 Storj software, and we simultaneously launched the beta for our Tardigrade Cloud Storage Service, which is (we expect) the first of many decentralized storage services built by many organizations using Storj software. This post discusses the very important qualification gateswe’ve established for each of our major milestones: Pioneer 1 (beta 1), Pioneer 2 (beta 2), and Voyager (production).

One of the most fundamental parts of a decentralized platform is that there is no single authority or owner. In a true decentralized ecosystem, everyone who participates is a critical contributor to the network.  At production launch, the Storj network will allow anyone to operate a Satellite in addition to the Tardigrade Satellites operated by Storj Labs. Being a Satellite operator is a big commitment with very stringent uptime requirements, much more so than a storage node operator.

We’re already approaching the end of summer, but things are still heating up here at Storj Labs! We’ve been on fire adding the final features and improvements ahead of our Pioneer 1 beta launch in the next few weeks, and iced coffee and nitro cold brew are the only two things keeping us cool. Recent development accomplishments: We finished implementing the garbage collection feature but have disabled it on storage nodes for the time being until our testing efforts finish and we are confident that there are no bugs.

As we get closer to launching Pioneer 1 (our first beta release), we’ve been burning the midnight oil finishing features and squashing bugs! We expect we’ll be launching this release in the next few weeks, so be on the lookout. From V0.14.3 to V0.15.3 releases we had over 200 PRs get merged into our V3 codebase. If you haven’t had a chance to watch our town hall from last week, please check it out, it has tons of information about where we’re headed.

Today we crossed another major milestone off our list on the road to production. We’re happy to announce the release of Beacon. This is the last update ahead of our Pioneer 1 (Beta), which we’re planning to release mid-July. Beacon is a huge milestone for several reasons. In addition to general improvements, it adds three major updates. File sharing with macaroons: As we mentioned before, macaroons are cryptographic authorization credentials that enable decentralized encryption key management.

It has been almost a month since we posted our last development update, so strap in, this is a long one. Since our last update, we’ve merged over 250 PRs, which equates to about 30,000 lines of code added and 10,000 lines deleted. This code is for the functionality we’re building into the network for our Beacon and Pioneer releases. Part of our team has been focused on finishing out the last bits of functionality for Beacon, while the rest of our team has been focused on Pioneer.
