John Gleeson, COO of Storj, presented some incredible performance testing results at IBC 2024. You can watch the full presentation above, or read the summary here.

Speed is critical for the media and entertainment (M&E) industry. For both production and post-production workflows, consistently fast performance, at any location, is needed to meet critical deadlines and save money. This article explores how Storj achieves that level of speed, performance, and cost-effectiveness the M&E industry needs today.

Storj is on average 42% faster than AWS worldwide.

Gleeson showed performance results from a 5MB download worldwide on Storj, AWS, and two other providers. Storj is consistently faster from all around the world. While AWS S3 is the cloud industry standard, Storj is almost twice as fast.

This is an incredible performance metric from Storj, a cloud storage provider that doesn’t own a single data center.

Storj partners are reporting even faster performance.

In his presentation, Gleeson also shared results from a few of Storj’s partners for media file transfer. Signiant’s Media Shuttle integrated with Storj and achieved consistent transfer rates of 2.5 Gbps per transfer, ranking in the top 1% of all Media Shuttle transfers. In this real-world example, Signiant could handle multiple simultaneous multi-gigabit transfers on Storj.

Beam Transfer is a new camera to cloud solution that is built on top of the distributed cloud because Storj was the fastest object storage for media. Gleeson reported Beam Transfer experienced 1.17 GB/s average upload and download speed of a 40 GB file on a 10 Gbps network.

These test results demonstrate Storj’s capability for high-speed, large file transfers in real-world media workflows --- all at an average of 80% less cost than AWS.

What makes Storj so fast?

Storj makes the proximity of your data irrelevant when it comes to speed. For media workflows, speed for media transfer is critical. However, not all cloud storage providers are the same. As an example, when you’re uploading with AWS S3, you’ve got a single path from source to destination. If there is any slow part, it’s going to govern how fast (or how slow) you move on that path. Downloading with AWS S3 is the same thing.

Why traditional cloud storage architecture is slower.

Now, let’s look at why Storj distributed cloud architecture is faster. Storj’s distributed cloud storage is global by default. With tens of thousands of storage nodes around the world, uploads and downloads are incredibly fast from any location. Once the data is uploaded to Storj, the data is separated into smaller pieces and distributed globally. Downloads only take a small portion of the fastest pieces sent in parallel to rebuild the file.

Why distributed cloud architecture is faster.

Downloading from the Storj distributed cloud is fast. No matter where you’re downloading it, you’re getting the closest pieces to you. Even if one of the nodes, routers, or paths is slow, this doesn’t impact the speed of your download. All your data will have lower latency.

Erasure coding is another benefit of the Storj distributed network. As an example, Storj stores and transmits less data compared to traditional replication, enabling faster uploads/downloads while maintaining durability. That means no multi-region replication is needed, which can save you money.

M&E organizations realize that a lot of the media production industry is going global, with resources dispersed in different regions. The Storj distributed cloud helps minimize coordination, allowing rapid access to media files across globally distributed teams.

Work faster and smarter with Storj.

The M&E industry is rapidly evolving with the move to the cloud, remote film and post production, and the increasing need for global performance. Try the distributed cloud yourself with a free 25GB trial to see how Storj can speed up your workflows while saving you money.
